World’s Leading Micro-blogging Site Twitter has introduced an option which allows users to limit replies to their Tweets.Over the past two weeks Zimbabwean Twitter users who are popularly referred to as “Zwitters” have broken the internet with the #ZimbabweanLivesMatter campaign, which despite its popularity has brought its own toxicity of the country’s polarised social media and political atmosphere. The campaign points out to a dwindling democratic space, arrest of journalists and political activists amongst a whole range of issues. As such Zimbabwe’s Social Media Grounds have been a heated battle ground and some will feel a reprieve due to this new Twitter Reply Limiting function.
How Twitter’s new Reply limiting function works.
Here one simply needs to go on their Tweeting button and select any option on who they would want to reply to their posts.
Twitters latest option will come as a development to many social media users including celebrities who at some instances have suffered immensely as far as cyberbullying and hate speech is concerned with the latest casuality being Zimbabwean radio sensation Samantha Musa populary know as Misred.
In an interview Misred told a Ghananian radio station Y107.9 FM that there had been a disconnect between what happens on Zimbabwean Social Media and what’s actually on the ground. These comments triggered an uproar from Zimbabwe’s Social Media Users who felt that she had betrayed the #ZimbabweanLivesMatter hastag. She later issued an apology regretting how much pain her statement had caused to Zimbabweans.
However in the midst of such a storm,a significant number of influential Zwitters came to Misred’s defence and felt that she had a right to freedom of expression and these include Prominent Journalist Larry Kwirirayi who felt there was no democratic space to air one’s personal opinion on Twitter
Constitutional Lawyer Advocate Mnyama also felt that the angry rebuke of what Misred went through because of her personal opinion was nothing more than a serious case of dwindled democratic space and cyber bullyin
For the toxic Zimbabwean Social Media grounds, hopefully this new Twitter additional button limiting who replies to one’s post will go a long way in tackling cyberbullying and hate speech.
